Simply Visiting This World

Simply visiting this world is not an option. In the quote, "When we shrink from the world, our souls shrink, too" I agree that by not speaking up when you are confronted about a cause you agree or disagree with, you are not only hurting yourself, but you are hurting your society.

Granted, I have had times where I have not spoken up against something I do not agree with; however, I look back and wish I had. Through past experiences, I've learned that although I may not know how to articulate my thoughts, my opinion does matter. I believe in our society, women have grown up thinking they are not allowed to have their own opinions and therefore inherit their family's opinion. Yet, all people should not be afraid of sharing their thoughts, no matter what people may come to think of them.

Unfortunately, our society seems to continually be absorbed in what our peers think of us. I hope with this class we are all partaking in, we can help change how the world thinks of speaking up for a cause close to our heart.

I loved the poem quoted in the book written by Mary Oliver and I think she says what our life may look like if we do not speak up:
When it's over, I don't want to wonder
if I have made of my life something particular, and real.
I don't want to find myself sighing and frightened,
or full of argument.

I don't want to end up simply having visited this world.

Great comment! We do tend to worry what people think about us but I think this has to do with maturity and family beliefs or values...

I think it is a little scary to step up in the heat of the moment, and speak your mind. I too have had times where I kept my mouth shut, and wished I had said something. I also hope that we can all accept one another, and feel free to share our thoughts on a topic. That is the only way we will truly have a dynamic class structure.

Wow that quote at the end was great I have never heard it before. I think many people can agree thought that they dont want to have regrets or every have the thought... " I wish I would have."
